独立主格结构的本质是分词（现在分词和过去分词）作状语时，分词的逻辑主语不是句子的主语，因而分词带上了自己的逻辑主语。分词的逻辑主语是以名词或代词的主格形式加在分词之前。现代英语名词的主格消失了，用通格形式。当一个独立主格结构中看不到分词时，其实就是省略be的现在分词being。即名词或代词+（being）+名词、形容词、副词、介词短语、to do不定式。过去分词本身就是分词。没有必要理解为省略了being。名词、形容词、副词、介词短语与前面的主格代词或名词为系表关系，省略了系词being。to do不定式是be to do结构，省略了be的现在分词being。所以要按照be to do结构去理解该不定式的语义。明白这个道理，例句就没有必要再啰嗦了。having been是不省略的。having been done 是现在分词完成被动式，强调动作发生在谓语时间之前；done是过去分词，表示谓语时间动作处于已经结束的状态，强调的是状态。所以二者的意思并不是完全相同的。Arthur (being) gone, ... 不是Arthur (having) gone, ...。即省略的是being，不是having。

as可以是连词，也可以是介词。当比较结构只有as+名词或代词时，如果as+名词或代词可以扩展为一个分句，则as被认为是连词。如果无法扩展为分句，则as被分析为介词。His book is the same as mine. as为连词，mine后省略了is。He has the same book as i do. as为连词。He has the same book as I或者是me？当as I do 省略do时，口语体通常用宾格代词me替换 I。此时as则被重新分析为介词。as I 这种形式不够自然，要么改为as I do, 要么改为as me.
