He is a liar and (a) cheat.又如:He is a writer and (a) translator. She is a model and (an) artist. He is a pessimist and (a) defeatist. Her father is a painter and (a) poet. He is a professor and (an) author. Peroxide is a bleach and (an) antiseptic.

但这不是绝对的,比如《张道真英语语法大全》就对此专门做了一个小结(以下摘录该书的内容):某人或某动物具有的东西 (如身体的一部分等), 也可指某物的一部分:John’s facemy father’s legsthe scientist’s brainthe dog’s eyesgoat’s meatthe lion’s heartHe is at his wit’s (or life’s, journey’s) end. He has English at his fingers’ ends (or tips). He lives near the town’s end (or the water’s edge, the wood’s edge, the city’s centre, the hill’s foot, the river’s head, the mountain’s top, the river’s mouth, the mountain’s side). They are at sword’s points.

I’ve always loved the ocean. In the seventh grade, I started volunteering at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California. I was upset to learn that many sea animals eat plastic garbage, thinking it is food. I decided to do something to educate people about this problem. I held presentations at schools to teach kids about plastic waste. I wanted to reach businesses too. I decided that if I learned of a company which / that used a lot of plastic, I’d send it an email urging it to cut back. One day, I saw a commercial for a health-care company. People in the ad were using plastic straws (吸管). I found the contact information of the company and emailed its president. I told him how harmful plastic could be to the environment and asked him to consider using more eco-friendly options. I was so excited when he wrote back to me. He said he would make sure that the company cut its use of plastic straws in half. I kept going. Whenever I heard of businesses using plastic, I’d send an email. One of the biggest companies I wrote to was Alaska Airlines. A company representative wrote back and told me the airline was switching over from plastic to paper cups on all of its 1,200 daily flights. I was upset to learn that many sea animals eat plastic garbage, thinking it is food.

He seemed different than he did in New York. 附:different from / to / than 的相关用法说明:要用different表示“与…不同”,英国英语可后接 to,美国英语可后接 than,但两者均不如用from 普遍(英美通用):He is different from / to / than us. You look different than (you did) before. 注意,若其后接的是一个没有引导词的句子,原则上只能用than:Schools are different than they used to be. The movie was different than I expected. We’re not really any different than they are. 但若 different 后面接的是一个以what引导的从句,则也可用from或to:She is quite different than / from / to what we thought.=She is quite different than we thought. The job’s different than / from / to what I expected.=The job’s different than I expected.

The children busied themselves with puzzles all day. He busied himself in the workshop building things. I pride myself on my math skills. The restaurant prides itself on having the best pizza in town.
