1. be about to do sth

(1)即将，马上(不与具体时间状语连用)。如：

Work was about to start on a new factory building. 新厂房即将动工。

Their daughter is about to graduate from college. 他们的女儿即将大学毕业。

I was just about to tell you when you interrupted. 我正要告诉你，你把话打断了。

My foot slipped as I was about to shoot and I missed the ball. 正当我要射门时，脚底一滑，未能踢到球。

(2)打算，有意，愿意(主要见于美国英语中，且主要用于否定句)。如：

I’m not about to admit defeat. 我还不想认输。

I’m not about to lend him any more money. 我不打算再借给他任何钱。

I’m not about to let them walk all over me. 我不会让他们肆意欺负我的。

I’m not about to stop when I’m so close to success. 现在我已接近要成功了，我不打算放弃。

The company was not about to relinquish its hold on the market. 公司将不会放弃这个市场。

2. How [What] about (doing) sth?

(1)用于征求意见，意为：你认为(做)某事怎么样？如：

How about one more dance? 再跳一支舞怎么样？

How about dinner out for a change? 我们换换口味出去吃如何？

What about taking a few days off? 休假几天怎么样

What about the question of security? 安全的问题怎么办?

(2)询问情况或打听消息，意为：(做)某事怎么样？如：

What about that matter the other day? 早几天的那件事怎么样了？

How about Ruth? Have you heard from her? 露丝怎么样了？你有她的消息吗？

What about my copier? Can you get it going again? 我的复印机怎么样了？你能把它修好吗？

(3) 用于引出新话题，意思是“…又怎么样？”如：

What about you, Jim? How have you been recently? 你怎么样，吉姆？你最近怎么样？

What about father? We can't just leave him here. 父亲怎么办？我们总不能把他撇在这里。

(3)表示讽刺或挖苦，意为：你做某事又作何解释？你做某事又怎么说？如：

A: I have never had an accident while driving. 我开车从未出过事。

B: How about that time you ran into a lamppost? 那次你撞到路灯上又怎么解释呢？

注：其后除了通常接名词、代词或动我词外，有时也接状语从句。如：

How about if we tell him the news now? 要是我们现在告诉他这个消息会怎么样？

How about when you get up too late? 当你起床太晚时怎么办？
