宁愿……而不愿……；喜欢……而不喜欢……；与……相比，更喜欢……（用于比较两个名词或动名词）

1.连接成分

(1) 用于比较两个名词

I prefer the town to the country. 我喜欢城市而不喜欢乡下。

I prefer the seaside to the mountains. 我喜欢海边，不喜欢山区。

I prefer jazz to rock music. 我喜欢爵士乐胜于摇滚乐。

I prefer Venice to Rome. 我喜欢威尼斯胜过罗马。

He prefers ballet to opera. 与歌剧相比，他更喜欢芭蕾舞。

She prefers rice to needles. 与面条相比她更喜欢米饭。

Most Chinese preferred tea to coffee. 茶和咖啡相比大多数中国人喜欢喝茶。

(2) 用于比较两个动名词

I’d prefer playing outdoors to watching television. 我宁愿在外面玩而不愿看电视。

I prefer going to the cinema to watching TV. 我更喜欢看电影而不是看电视。

I preferred playing matches to watching them. 我喜欢参加比赛而不喜欢观看比赛。

I prefer flying to traveling by train. 与坐火车旅行相比，我更喜欢乘飞机旅行。

I prefer driving to travelling by train. 我宁愿自己开车也不愿坐火车。

I prefer walking to riding a bike. 我觉得走路比骑自行车好。

He prefers renting a car to having one of his own. 他宁可租一辆汽车，而不愿自己拥有一辆。

She seems to prefer watching soap operas to talking to me. 她似乎更喜欢看肥皂剧，而不愿与我交谈。

She prefers making toys for her children rather than buying them in the shops. 她更喜欢为孩子们自制玩具，而不喜欢在商店里买。

I prefer starting early rather than leaving things to the last minute. 我愿意早开始而不愿意把事情都拖到最后一分钟。

两点注意：

a.连接成分的补充：perfer...to...除通常用于连接两个名词（包括代词）或动名词外，有时也可能连接两个相当于名词的其他结构（但通常不能是不定式）。如：

I prefer better to more, but my husband prefers more to better. 我喜欢东西质量好，而不是喜欢数量多；而我的丈夫则喜欢数量多，而不在乎质量好不好。

b.省略用法的理解：比较两个动名词时，若动名词相同，只是其后的宾语或状语不同，通常可省略后面一个动名词。如：

I prefer photographing people rather than places. 与拍风景相比，我更喜欢拍人物照。（rather than后面省略了photographing）

类似地，如果待比较的两个名词相同，只是形容词不同，有时也可以省略后面一个名词，而只保留形容词。如：

He prefers expensive things to cheap. 他喜欢贵的东西，而不喜欢便宜的东西。

c.连用would, should：这类结构的prefer前有时也可用would, should等。如：

We’d prefer playing outdoors to watching television. 我们宁愿在外面玩而不愿看电视。

Do newborns simply prefer more to fewer? 新生婴儿只是更喜欢多的而不喜欢少的？(2013全国卷Ⅰ阅B)

That is why fish prefer shallow water to deep water because the former is warmer. 这就是为什么鱼喜欢浅水而不喜欢深水的原因，因为浅水比较温暖。(2015广东卷阅B)

2.相似补充

上面说到prefer...to...用于比较两个名词或动名词，但不用于比较两个不定式。如果是比较两个不定式，则用prefer…rather than…（rather than后面的不定式通常省略to，但prefer后面的不定式必须带to）。如：

He prefers to read rather than watch television. 他喜欢读书而不喜欢看电视。

She preferred to stay at home rather than (to) go out. 和出门比起来，她比较喜欢待在家里。

She prefers to walk rather than cycle. 她宁可步行，不愿骑车。

She prefers to die rather than to admit she is wrong. 她宁死也不认错。

She prefers to act rather than (to) direct. 她宁愿当演员，不愿当导演。

She prefers to steam carrots rather than (to) boil them. 她喜欢把胡萝卜蒸着吃而不是煮着吃。

两点注意：

b.省略用法的理解：比较两个不定式时，若动词相同，只是其后的宾语不同或状语，通常可省略后面一个不定式。如：

I prefer to travel by day rather than by night. 我喜欢在白天而不是在晚上旅行。（rather than后面省略了to travel）

I prefer to see animals in their natural surroundings rather than in zoos. 我更喜欢在自然环境中而不是在动物园里看到动物。（rather than后面省略了to see them）

b.连用would, should：这类结构的prefer前有时也可用would, should等。如：

I'd prefer to play football rather than go swimming. 我宁愿踢足球也不去游泳。

c.不要与prefer...to...混用

误：I prfer going rather than staying.

正：I prfer going to staying. 我宁愿去而不愿留下。
