1. 主要词义与用法

(1) 生存，存活，幸存：

There was little hope that they would survive. 他们幸存的希望很小。

We cannot survive for long without food and drink. 我们没有食物和饮料就活不了多久。

If not for modern medicine, fewer babies would survive. 要不是有现代医学，幸存的婴儿会更少。

Only the strongest will survive. 只有最强者才能得以幸存。

(2) 从…逃出，幸免于：

The plants may not survive the frost. 这些植物不经冻。

He survived the crash but died in the desert. 飞机坠毁时他幸免于难，后来却死在沙漠里。

She survived the attack. 她在袭击中幸免于难。

She survived the accident without injury. 她在这次事故中没有受伤。

The goods survived the journey undamaged. 运送路途艰难, 但货物丝毫无损。

(3) [I]保存下来：

It’s a great pity that none of his poems survive. 非常遗憾，他的诗歌没有一首保存下来。

Where written records do survive, they are incomplete. 即使那些保存下来的书面记录也并不完整。

(4) [T]比…活的时间长

其后接人作宾语，若要表示多活的具体时间，通常用介词for，by来引出。如：

He survived his wife for [by] five years. 他比他的妻子多活了5年。

He is survived by his wife and two babies. 他死后遗下妻子和两个幼儿。

Most women will survive their husbands. 大多数女性都比丈夫长寿。

2 用法注意与易错点

表示“从……逃出”“免于……”时，为及物动词，其后直接跟宾语，不要想当然地在其后误加介词from或in。如：

你能在这场事故中幸存，真是万幸。

误：You are lucky to have survived from the accident.

误：You are lucky to have survived in the accident.

正：You are lucky to have survived the accident.

但如果是指从某时间或时期留存下来，则可以连用介词from。如：

No letters survive from this early period. 早期的信件并没有保留下来。

另外，如果要表示在某地方、某条件下存活下来，则可以用介词in。如：

It is hard for these animals to survive in such places. 这些动物在那样的地方存活。

These plants cannot survive in cold conditions. 这些植物无法在寒冷的条件下生存。

The drought had worsened their chances of survival. 出现干旱后他们就更难活命了。

The school depends for its survival on money from the church. 这所学校靠教堂提供的经费来维持。
