■able/'eɪbl/ adj.
1.表示“有能力的”“能干的”,可用作表语或定语。如:
(1)用作定语:
He is an able manager. 他是位有能力的经理。
He’s an able politician, but he’s not one of us. 他是位能干的政治家,但他不是我们自己人。
The government is led by an able team of skilled politicians. 政府由一批干练的政治家领导。
(2)用作表语:
He is old but still able. 他虽年老,但仍有很能干。
She seems very able. 她好像很能干。
I will help you as far as I am able. 我会尽我所能帮助你。
Everyone contributes according as he is able. 每个人根据自己的能力作出贡献。
The dancers were technically very able. 这些舞蹈演员的演技十分出众。
She’ll help us, inasmuch as she is able. 只要她力所能及,她就会帮助我们。
2.able的比较级和最高级有两种构成方式,既可加-er, -est,也可加more, most。如:
He is the ablest / most able student in the class. 他是班上最有才华的学生。
She’s an abler teacher / a more able leader than he is. 她是比他更称职的领导。
有时还用better able和best able构成比较等级。如:
He is better able to do the work than I am. 他比我更能做好这工作。
It should be done by those who are best able to do it. 这事应该由最有能力的人去做。
3.用于 be able to do sth结构,其意为“能做某事”“会做某事”。如:
He is able to speak English. 他会说英语。
Everyone here is able to type. 这儿的每一个人都会打字。
He will be able to get about in a week or two. 再过一两个星期左右他就能走动了。
He studied hard and was able to pass his examinations. 他学习很努力,所以考试及了格。
be able to 不仅有多种时态形式(通常不用于进行时或与 be going to 连用),而且还可以与某些情态动词连用(通常不与 can 连用),甚至还可以有非谓语形式。如:
Since his accident he hasn’t been able to leave the house. 自出事之后,他一直未能离开家。
You might be able to persuade him. 你也许能够说服他。
I hope to be able to do the work. 我希望能干得了这项工作。
I regret not being able to help her. 我很遗憾未能帮助她。
