在龙门书局出版2012年2月第一版《新课标高考英语基础知识精要》一书中，有这样一 道完成句子训练题：A large quantity of birds ________from nutritious eggs and the baby birds were bound to be taken good care of. (hatch)大量的鸟儿从有营养的蛋里孵出来，这些幼鸟有必要被好好照顾。（p.102）该书所给的答案是was hatched（p.203）。 这个答案是错误的。正确答案应该是：were hatched “quantity”，“ quantity of…”和“quantities of…”作主语时，谓语动词有以下几种形式： （一）如果单独用quantity作主语，谓语动词应该用单数。例如： It is used to emphasize that the quantity is very large. 它用于强调数量很大。 （一）“a large （great ，small）quantity of+复数名词”作主语时，谓语动词用复数形 式；“a large （great ，small） quantity of+不可数名词”作主语时，谓语动词用单数形式。这些短语后面都不能接可数名词的单数形式。例如： There are only a small quantity of flowers left in the garden. 花园里只剩少量的鲜 花了。（《英语常见问题解答大词典》p.84 赵振才编著，黑龙江人民出版社出版，1998年8月第1版） There are a small quantity of apples in the house. 房子里有少量的苹果。 A large quantity of food was on the table. 大量的食物摆在桌上。 （二）quantities of后面接复数名词或者不可数名词作主语时，谓语动词应该用复数形 式。quantities of后面不能接可数名词的单数形式。例如： Quantities of books were on the desk . 桌上有很多书。 （外语教学与研究出版社出版发行2008年7月第1版《外研社英汉多功能词典》p.1700） Huge quantities of oil were spilling into the sea. 大量的石油渗到海里。 Quantities of food were on the table.（Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English by Paul Procter, Robert F.
