(a) part of修饰哪类名词

《薄冰英语语法》（开明出版社第三版2015，P. 564）有这么个句子：A part of the apples are bad.一部分苹果是坏的。

 薄冰教授在由其主编的《薄冰英语惯用法词典》中也有这类正面例句。例如：

（1）A part of the textbooks have arrived.一小部分教科书已经运到了。

（2）(A) part of the books are interesting.这些书中有一部分很有趣。

国内出版的其它辞书，在part词条下也多列有类似例句。例如葛传槼《英语惯用法词典》、吕志士《英语惯用法大词典》、张鑫友《英语相似词语辨析词典》等等。

但是，这样的句子并不符合英语习惯用法。

当(a) part of 表示“...中的一部分/一些”时，英语的习惯是用其修饰可数名词单数或不可数名词。

CCEU明确指出：You do not use ‘part of’ or ‘a part of’ in front of a plural noun group. You do not say, for example, ‘Part of the soldiers have no rifles’. You say ‘Some of the soldiers have no rifles’. …Similarly, you do not say ‘A large part of the houses have flat roofs’. You say ‘ Many of the houses have flat roofs’. 

OGEG也同样指出：We normally use part of only before a singular noun.例如：

（3）(A) part of the film was shot in Iceland.

（4）some of the students  NOT part of the students

LDCE（1993）也指出：(a) part of+ uncountable noun/singular form of a countable noun. 例如：

（5）☓ Nowadays a large part of women go out to work.

（6）√ Nowadays a large number of women go out to work

试比较：

（7）A large part of the population is unemployed.

（8）A large number of workers are unemployed.

由此可知，不宜用A part of the apples are bad来表示“一部分苹果是坏的”，应改为Some of the apples are bad。

不过，有些例外情况也须注意。如果part of另有它意，或其后的复数另有它意，则有可能出现part of + 名词（或代词）复数的情况。例如：

（09）Some suffixes were part of the words when they were borrowed from other languages: doctor, eternity, courage.（IEG）(对于一些源于其他语言的词汇，他们的后缀本身就是词汇的一部分)

（10）Make these sentences more emphatic by 'fronting' part of them. (LALG) （通过将每个句子的一部分前置以强调下列句子。）

句（09）中part of the words的意思绝不是“其中的一些词汇”（比如说doctor, eternity, courage中的前两个等），而是“这些词汇各自本身的构成部分”（比如说doctor中的-or, eternity中的-ity, courage中的-age）。因此，part of the words不可能改写为some of the words.

句（10）的part of them也可通过上下文判断绝非some of them（部分句子）之意，而是part of each (sentence)之意，即把“每个句子的一部分”前置。从形式上看，them是复数，实质上与part相关的却是单数each sentence。因此，part of them也不可能改写成some of them。

显然，句（09）和（10）中的“part of + 名词复数”与《薄冰英语语法》a part of the apples不是同一回事，两者没有可比性。

当然，也会有人在口语中使用part时会出现一定的随意性和多样性。但作为英语学习者，应该采用规范的、地道的习惯用法；而英语语法专著和词典工具书则更有责任做到这一点。
