有时在语意明确的情况下不定式可以省略。如：
He will buy a new car as soon as he is
able. 等条件允许他就会买辆新车。（=as soon as he is able to buy a care.）

1. able的比较级和最高级通常是abler和ablest，也可以是more able和most able，有时还可用better able和best
able：
He is abler actor than I thought. 他是一个比我原来想象中更有才能的演员。
Mary is more [better] able to help you
than I am. 玛丽比我更能帮助你。
The most able pupils are creamed off
and put into special classes. 最有才华的学生被挑选出来编入特别班。
2.be able to do
sth 中的不定式通常用主动式，一般不用被动式，如：
可以说：He can’t be
understood.
很少说：He’s not able
to be understood.
3. 表示很能干或很有能力，可用very,
extremely等修饰；表示能做某事(用于be able to)则多用quite, well, perfectly等修饰：
He is a very able manager. 他是位很有能力的经理。
He is quite / well able to take care of
himself. 他完全可以照顾自己了。
There are some extremely able and
intelligent children at Summerhill. 萨默希尔学校有一些非常聪明能干的学童。
4. able的反义词是unable(不能的，不会的)，不是disable，后者是动词，其意为“使残废”“使无能力”；disabled 也可用作形容词，表示“肢体有残疾的”。
5. 有的语言学家认为英语习惯上不能用make sb able to do sth，要改为enable sb to do sth，但事实上，make sb able to do sth的用法在英语中很常见，而且在许多原版词典中也有收录。如：
