...(or...)不能引导宾语从句吗

在很多初中英语教辅类资料中，经常可以看到类似这样的论述：“选择疑问句作宾语从句的时候，只能用whether 不能用 if 作连词。”某英语报刊社的一位外籍编审（英语语言博士）也认为这种说法是正确的。
笔者认为，在现代英语中，选择疑问句作宾语从句的时候，通常使用 whether 作连词，但是，用 if 作连词也是正确的。例如：
1.在外语教学与研究出版社出版发行2002年5月第1版《张道真实用英语语法》（最新版）第518页上有这样两个例句：
He asked me whether (if) I wanted to go by train or by plane.
She asked whether (if) I was leaving that day or the
following day.
2.在商务印书馆和牛津大学出版社（中国）有限公司2002年1月第1版《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》（第四版增补本）第735页上有这样的例句：
He couldn't tell if she was laughing or crying. 他弄不清她是笑还是哭。
3.在 Longman Group Limited
1985年出版的由英国 Randolph Quirk, Sindney Greenbaum, Geoffrey Leech 和 Jan Svartvik 四人合著的 A Comprehensive Grammar of
the English Language 第1053页（第15.6节）上有这样的例句：
I asked them if they wanted MEAT or FISH.
4.在美国Sandra N. Elbaum 主编、外语教学与研究出版社出版发行2002年8月第1版 GRAMMAR IN CONTEXT （高级美国英语语法）一书的第356页上，也有这样的例句：
(Direct Question) Should she work or stay home with her
children?
(Included Question as Noun Clause) She can't decide whether (or
if) she should work or stay home with her children.
5.中国大百科全书出版社2017年1月第1版《韦氏高阶英汉双解词典》p.1048 上的例句如下：
I’ll see if [= whether] I can come. 我会看看我是否能来。
Do you know if he’ll come to the party? 你知道他是否会来参加聚会？
I wonder if it’s true (or not). 我想知道这是不是真的。
Frankly, I doubt if he’ll pass the exams. 坦率地说，我怀疑他能否通过这些考试。
She asked if the mail had come. 她问邮件到了没有。
We should determine / decide if it is safe to go swimming.我们应该确定去游泳是否安全。
