Tom and his friend are very alike.

alike意为“相像”,是表语形容词,前面不可用very修饰,应说much alike或very much alike,用very much比much普遍。例如:
The father and the son are alike, both being early risers.
Mother and daughter are very much alike in their fear of snakes.
She and her sister are very alike. (Longman Dictionary of American English, 4th edition, 2008)
We looked very alike. (Collins COBUILD Advanced Dictionary of English, 2009)
The children all look very alike. (Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary; 4th Edition, 2013)
Bill and Tom are very alike. (A Practical English Grammar, 4th Edition,1986)
The two boys are very alike. (Oxford American Dictionary for Learners of English, 2011)
The correspondences are interesting; the two sets of information are very alike. (Longman Lexicon of Contemporary English,1992)
