关于can 表示可能性在肯定句中的用法初探

有些词典和辅导资料指出：can 表示可能性只能用于否定句和疑问句，不能用于肯定句。

这种说法是不符合英语的实际情况的。以下内容完全可以证明，在肯定句中，can 可以表示现在或者将来的可能性。

Any man can make mistakes, but only an idiot persists in his error. 【谚语】人人都可能犯错误，但只有白痴才知错不改。

英国著名语言学家 Geoffrey N. Leech 在《简明英语语法和用法指南》 (英语版书名为An A-Z English Grammar and Usage) 中指出：

can 意为“可能。

例：The weather can be very hot in Delhi. (i.e. “Very hot weather is possible...”) 德里的天气有时可能会很热。

If it rains, we can hold the party indoors. (i.e. “it will be possible for us to hold the party indoors.”) 如果下雨，我们可能在室内开舞会。

can... 3 a — used to say that something is or is not possible可能，也许，有可能，会（表可能性）... At this time of year many birds can be found on the island. [ = there are many birds on the island at this time of year] 每年的这个时候，岛上都会有很多鸟。（摘自2017年1月第1版《韦氏高阶英汉双解词典》 P.300）

can... 2b. used for saying that it is possible to do something (用于表示有可能做某事)： You can travel from London to New York in under 6 hours these days. 现在从伦敦到纽约只需要不到6个小时。（摘自《麦克米伦高阶英汉双解词典》）

Temperatures can reach 40 degrees C in the summer. 夏天气温可能达到40摄氏度。（同上）

Even minor head injuries can be serious. 头部即使受轻伤也可能很严重。（同上）

Coral can be yellow, blue or green. 珊瑚可能会是黄色、蓝色或绿色的。（摘自《柯林斯高阶英汉双解学习词典》第8版p.274）

《剑桥高阶英汉双解词典》 (p.299) 指出：情态动词可以表示可能性（used to express possibility）... Smoking can cause cancer. 吸烟可能会导致癌症。

赵振才教授在《英语常见问题解答大词典》增订版第五版中提供了以下肯定句，其中的 can 都表示可能性：

Even expert drivers can make mistakes。即使很老练的司机也有可能犯错误。

Mr Reed is in poor health. He can be ill at any time. 里德先生身体状况不好，他随时都可能生病。

If it’s raining tomorrow, the sports can take place indoors. 如果明天下雨，运动会可能在室内举行。

Noise can be quite a problem when you’re living in a flat. 如果你住在公寓里，噪音可能是一个很大的问题。

So data of this kind can be valuable. 所以，这类资料可能是很有价值的。

Lightning can be dangerous. 闪电可能是很危险的（闪电有时是很危险的）。

【建议】由于在我们国内出版的词典和很多辅导资料都有类似“can 表示可能性只能用于否定句和疑问句，不能用于肯定句”的内容，所以，在参加国内的英语考试时，遇到需要在肯定句中表示可能性时，最好不用 can，而选用其它词语，如may 或者could等，否则容易被判为错误而扣分。例如：

在《1993年全国普通高等学校招生统一考试英语》中，有这样一道试题：

21. Peter _____ come with us tonight, but he isn’t very sure yet.

A. Must   B. may    C. can     D. will

这道题的标准答案是 B. may。实际上，C. can 也是正确的。这里的 may 和 can 都是“可能”的意思，题意都是：“彼得今晚可能同我们一起去，但他还是不能肯定。”用may还是can 的区别不是正确与错误，仅仅是表现在语体上： may 用于正式语体，而 can 用于非正式语体，尤其是用于会话中。
