be spent in doing sth中的介词真的不能省略吗

章振邦教授在《新编高级英语语法》中指出:“在 spend 的被动结构后,一般不可省略 in:The whole morning seemed to be spent in loading the car with a variety of bags , baskets and mysterious parcels.” (上海外语教育出版社2012年12月第1版p.419)
我认为,章教授的说法不符合英语的实际情况。实际上,在 spend 的被动结构 be spent in doing sth中的介词是可以省略的。例如:
