sleep late的意思是“睡得晚”吗

经常看到学生将
sleep late 翻译成“睡得晚”，但有趣的是，有些词典也将 sleep
late 翻译成“睡得晚”。如：
I
sleep late on Saturdays. 周六我睡得很晚。（《韦氏高阶英语词典》中国大百科全书出版社翻译出版，第2489页）
I
usually sleep late on Sundays. 星期天我通常睡得很晚。（《（新版）朗文高阶英汉双解词典》late词条，第1283页，外语教学与研究出版社翻译出版）
很显然，上面这两句都是对 sleep
late 的误译。其实 sleep 指的是“处于睡眠的状态”，《剑桥高阶》对动词 sleep 的解释是 to
be in the state of rest when your eyes are closed, your body is not active, and
your mind is unconscious，所以 sleep
late 的实际意思是“睡眠的状态持续到很晚的时候”，也就是说它表示的不是“睡得晚”，而是“起得晚”或“睡懒觉”。比如：
sleep late ( = not
get up until late in the morning) 睡懒觉（《朗文当代英语辞典》4版）
We
sometimes sleep late at the weekends
(= until late in the morning). 周末我们有时候睡懒觉。（《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》第8版）
If
you’re tired, why don’t you sleep late
(=sleep until late in the morning) tomorrow? 如果你累了，明天为什么不晚点起床啊？《朗文中阶英汉双解词典》（第4版)
若要表示“睡得晚”“睡得迟”，可用stay up
late, go to bed late, go to sleep late等。如：
I
went to bed later than usual. 我比往常睡得晚。
She
goes to bed late and gets up late. 她睡得晚，起得也晚。
Staying
up late will do harm to your health. 睡得晚对身体有害。
I
stayed up late last night so I am kind of tired. 昨晚上我睡得晚，现在有点累。
If
I go to bed late, I find it hard to get up in the morning. 我要是睡得晚，我就发现早晨很难起床。
