对中国外语教师群“有问必答”的问题商榷（之十二）

◆近来，我有幸读到中国外语教师群的“有问必答”，是中国外语教育专家张鑫友教授，针对教师群里老师们的问题所作的解答。看了几期之后，感觉受益匪浅。

◆不过，有些问题，张教授可能一时疏忽，解答得不够准确，甚至出现错误。我觉得，有必要把它们指出来，并阐明我自己的观点。以期更好地为老师们答疑解惑，为英语教学服务。

以下问答，来自FLTA外语教师联盟、中国外语教师群“有问必答”（第5期）

【问】麻烦专家们分析一下下面这个句子结构并翻译：

Our mind pronounces its judgement not only based on the face value but also its own understanding of the mind of the person.

【答】张老师点评：

上面的句子可意译为：

我们对事物的判断不仅要看其表，而且要知其内。

Not only…but also在这儿连接的是并列后置定语，but also后省了based on，更佳的句子结构应是把not only放在based on后面，即

based on not only the face value but also its own…

【我的观点】

Our mind pronounces its judgement not only based on the face value but also its own understanding of the mind of the person.

【直译】人的大脑作出判断，不仅要根据表象，而且也要根据其对人的内心之了解。

有两个地方，我跟张教授的看法不一致：

一、用并列连词not only...but also... 连接的这个过去分词短语based on...，在句中作“方式状语”，表示“作出判断”的方式，不是作its judgement 的后置定语。句子含义是：“根据......作出判断”；不是“作出依据......的判断”。当然，based on不是不可以作定语，但要根据不同的句子和修饰关系来确定。下面，我们分别观察based on作定语和作状语的情况：

作定语：

1. This is a novel based on historical facts. 这是一部基于历史事实的小说。

2. He's demonstrated how a campaign based on domestic issues can move votes.  他已证明了基于国内议题的竞选活动是可以拉到选票的。

作状语：

1. They're making judgments based on a narrowly focused vision of the world.  他们是根据狭隘的世界观做出判断的。

2. Much of her work is speculative, based on psychoanalytic theory rather than empirical data.

她的著作中有相当一部分内容是推测性的，（推测）建立在精神分析理论之上而缺乏来自实际经验的数据。

二、关于not only...but also...的位置：

1. not only based on the face value but also its own understanding of the mind of the person （原句）

2. based on not only the face value but also its own understanding of the mind of the person （张教授的看法）

3. based not only on the face value but also on its own understanding of the mind of the person

以上3种表达中，第1种说法比较常见，第2种说法相对少见。我认为，第3种说法应该是最常见的，体现对称性。
