1. 及物性问题

在现代英语中，abandon只用作及物动词，注意其后要接宾语或用被动语态。如：

The car was so badly damaged that it had to be abandoned as a total loss. 汽车损坏严重，只好彻底报废。

The poor little puppy had been abandoned. 那可怜的小狗被人遗弃了。

The project had to be abandoned for lack of funds. 工程因资金匮乏只得放弃。

That house was abandoned years ago. 那栋房子多年前就废弃了。

Snow forced many drivers to abandon their vehicles. 降雪迫使许多司机弃车步行。

She abandoned teaching career in favour of sport. 她为了体育运动而放弃了教师职业。

The game had to be abandoned due to bad weather. 由于天气不好，比赛不得不中止。

The next-best solution is to abandon the project altogether. 仅次于最佳的解决方法是放弃全部计划。

He had clearly abandoned all pretence of trying to succeed. 他显然不再假装为成功而努力了。

2. abandon A for B 与abandon A to B

abandon A for B 表示主动地为了B而放弃A，而 abandon A to B 则表示被动地放弃A让B取得。比较：

He decided to abandon medicine for literature. 他决定弃医从文。

They abandoned their lands to the invading forces. 他们丢下土地，遭侵略军占领。

3. 与冠词的搭配

在 abandon the car, abandon the city, abandon the village等搭配中都有冠词，而abandon ship这一结构在现代英语中通常不用冠词。如：

The captain gave the order to abandon ship. 船长下令弃船。

We were sinking fast, and the captain gave the order to abandon ship. 我们在快速地下沉，船长下令弃船。

4. 用于习语abandon oneself to

用于习语abandon oneself to，意思是“沉溺于”“纵情”，其中的to是介词，后接名词或动名词（不能接动词原型）。如：

She abandoned herself to grief. 她陷入悲痛之中，不能自拔。

You mustn’t abandon yourself to pleasures. 你不该一味享乐。

The lost girl abandoned herself to utter despair. 迷路的女孩陷于绝望。

They abandon themselves to drinking. 他们沉湎于饮酒。

类似结构有：

apply oneself to (doing) sth 专心于做某事

devote oneself to (doing) sth 致力(献身)于做某事

5. 备考提示

在近10年的高考题中，abandon 除见于阅读材料外，还经常出现在完形填空的选项中（被设置为正确答案或干扰项）。所以，记住它的意思是有必要的；否则，即使它被用作干扰项，你也无法排除它。

◇abandoned a.被抛弃的，被放弃的，报废的：

The police found the abandoned car. 警察找到了那辆被丢弃的汽车。

The fire started in an abandoned warehouse. 火是从一座废弃的仓库烧起来的。

Police found several guns in an abandoned car. 警察在一辆弃置的轿车里发现了一些枪支。

◇abandonment n.[U]放弃：

Child abandonment is a serious problem. 弃婴是一个严重的问题。

Her abandonment of the idea upset him. 她放弃了这一意见，他很不高兴。
