一、作代词使用时，后面不接名词，可以指人，也可以指动植物和其它事物。this和that是单数，它们的复数形式分别是 these 和 those。
1. 如果在问句中用 this 或者 that 作主语，回答时通常用 it （而不用 this 或者 that ）作主语，即使指人也不用 he 或者 she 作主语；如果在问句中用 these 或者 those 作主语，回答时通常用 they （而不用 these 或者 those ）作主语。例如：
(1) —Are those your
sister's shoes?
—_____. I buy them for my mother.
A. Yes, they aren’t B. No, those
aren’t C. Yes, those are D.No,they aren't
答案是D。
(2) —The photo is
very nice. Is this your mother?
—Yes, _____.

2.如果表语是单数名词，主语可以用this 或者that，不能用 these 或者 those；如果表语是复数名词，主语可以用 these 或者 those，不能用 this或者that。例如：
This is my father.
That is my mother.
These are my parents.
Those are my grandparents.
These are doctors.
Those are teachers.
This is my pen.
That is your book.
These are my pens.
Those are your books.
3.“这一切”是 all this ，不能说 this all。例如：
She recounted all this to her uncle. 她把这一切都告诉了叔叔。（《张道真高级英语词典》p.29）
4.词典所给词义一般是：“this 这，这个；that 那，那个；these这些；those 那些”。但是，根据上下文，也可以翻译为：“this这个人，that那个人，these这些人；those那些人”等。
二、作形容词使用时，没有比较级和最高级形式。
1. this和that 修饰单数名词；these和those修饰复数名词。例如：this book 这本书， this pen 这支钢笔， that cap 那顶帽子，that bed 那张床，these basketballs
这些篮球，those chairs 那些椅子
2. this和that，these和those 不能同时与冠词、形容词性物主代词等连用来修饰同一个名词。如不能说my this book,应该说this book of mine。
3. 在不可数名词前面，this和that 可以译为“这些”和“那些”，但是不能用these和those。例如：this medicine 这些药
