Any 和any other用法刍议

   我在解答网友疑问时曾遇到关于any和any other的用法区别的问题（https://www.cpsenglish.com/question/48251）， 我的一些提法也引起有的老师质疑，现特做进一步分析并和大家交流我的体会。

        网友的问题涉及《新概念英语》第二册第163页里面的一句话：He has been able to tell us more about active volcanoes than any man alive. 网友认为是不是any 后应该加other，这样才符合逻辑。很多老师也持这种观点，包括《英语常见问题解答大词典》的作者赵振才教授。但是，问题是如果是错的或疏忽，那么为什么媒体上经常看到不用other的情形呢？我觉得显然是作者故意而为。其实这是有一定道理的。我们通过分析几个例句来体会：

        首先，通常情况下，使用any other 主要是为了避免逻辑冲突，如：Mt Tai is taller than any other mountain in Shandong. 这里如果不用other, 逻辑上有冲突，因为泰山也在山东，除非它不在山东。例如：Mt Huang is taller than any mountain in Shandong. 黄山比任何山东的山都高。这个句子没有逻辑冲突。那么问题来了，请看下面例句，以下例句均来自英美媒体或文学作品：

1. Trump has arguably done more in his first year in office to protect life and religious freedom than any modern president.

2. Trump boasts he's taken better care of Puerto Rico than 'any living human being'.  

3. I can draw faster, shoot straighter, ride harder and drink longer than any man alive. 

4. Children are experiencing more pain in their lives today than any time in history.  

5. He knew more about the Avanti Cooperation than any man in the world.

6. You are my wife; you are dearer to me than anyone in the world. （英国文学名著）

7. President Obama has now granted more commutations than any president in this nation’s history.

        以上这些例句难道都错了吗？如果我们仔细体会，会发现应该是作者故意而为。那么作者为什么这样做呢，我想就是为了达到强调的效果， 因为如果用any other, other 是要重读的，这样相对弱化了any的分量。以Trump has arguably done more in his first year in office to protect life and religious freedom than any modern president.句为例：如果说any other modern president. 不如any modern president 语气更重。再看这句：You are my wife; you are dearer to me than anyone in the world. anyone 要比anyone else更有强调的意味。很明显，作者的意图是想强调对太太的爱是任何人所不能比的。网上有一位母语的老师在谈到man alive 和any other man alive的区别时这样说到：“You can either use “any man alive” or “any other man alive”. It is just a matter of wanting to sound more dramatic when we use any man alive.” 因次，我想这也是为什么在实践中，any man alive 要比any other man alive 更常见。

        当然，我们通过以上例句对比体会，还可以看出这些用法一般都是强调人的，不是强调客观事物。例如，如果我们强调某座山高，而忽略逻辑冲突，使用any mountain 一般是不可以的，至少是罕见的。因为客观事实的东西是明摆着的道理，不需要特意强调，甚至夸张。
