“主语 + be + when 从句”结构及类型分析

有网友问：1982 was when I got married. 这句话，主语是时间名词，表语从句可以是when从句吗？

英语中，when引导的从句用在be后作表语，构成“主语 + be + when-clause”结构。这种结构比较特殊，会有不同的含义和理解，因此值得探讨。该结构主要有以下三种情况：

第一类型：表疑问的词语 + be + when 型

1. My question is when we will start off. 我的疑问是，我们什么时间出发。

2. The problem is when he should do it.  问题是他什么时候该做这件事。

3. Their trouble is when they will start the business. 他们的问题是，他们何时将开始这一业务。

4. One key issue is when they will do the test?  一个关键问题是，他们什么时候做测试？

5. What I want to know is when the meeting will begin.  我想知道的是会议何时开。

【注意】这类句子，是真正意义上的系表结构：A是B。由于B是“确认性表语”，所以，也可以颠倒过来说：B是A。句子的主语是含有“疑问”、“悬而未决”等概念的名词（如：question, trouble），所以引导表语从句的when自然也表示疑问（“何时，什么时候”）。如果采用B是A格式，那么，表语从句就变成了主语从句。例如：

When we will start off is my question. 我们什么时间出发，是我的疑问。

When he should do it is the problem. 他什么时候该做这件事是个问题。

When the meeting will begin is what I want to know. 会议何时召开是我想知道的。

第二类型：表时间的词语 + be + when 型

（注：代词It, That, This 也可以用来指代某个时间）

1. That was when they fell in love. 那就是他们相爱的时候。

2. That was when I was taught to think. 就在那个时候，我学会了思考。

3. It was when anything could happen. 那个时候时什么事情都可能发生。

4. It was when my career was just starting to take off. 那正是我的事业刚刚起步的时候。

5. Last October was when we spent our honeymoon. 去年十月就是我们度蜜月的时候。

6. Thanksgiving is when people celebrate the harvest. 感恩节是人们庆祝丰收的时候。

7. I know he called me “darling” twice, and the other time was when he said good-bye. 我知道他叫过我两次“亲爱的”，另一次是在说再见的时候。

【注意】这类句子，充当主语的为“时间名词”或者“代词”（指代“时间”）。表语从句实际上是省略了先行词的定语从句，when 也叫“融合性关系副词”。有两个理由可以证明：1. 不能像第一类句子那样，主表可以颠倒位置，而句意不变；2. when从句没有“疑问”的意思。以上例句都可以在when之前加上一个省略了的时间名词，如the time或者相应的词语，意思保持不变。例如：

That was the time when they fell in love. 那就是他们相爱的时候。

It was the time when anything could happen. 那个时候什么事情都可能发生。

Last October was the month when we spent our honeymoon. 去年十月就是我们度蜜月的时候。

Thanksgiving is the day when people celebrate the harvest. 感恩节是人们庆祝丰收的时候。

【说明】网友的问题就属于这一类。1982 was when I got married. 等于说：1982 was the time (the year) when I got married.

第三类型：表事件的词语 + be + when 型

1. This is when small amounts of gases in the atmosphere, like carbon dioxide, methane and water vapor, trap heat from the sun and therefore warm the earth. 这（指：温室效应）发生在大气层中少量的气体，如二氧化碳，甲烷，水蒸气等，吸收太阳的热量，因而使地球变暖的时候。(is等于takes place)

2. The first I knew about it was when I woke up in the ambulance. 我最早知道这件事是在我从救护车中苏醒过来时。（意译：当我从救护车中苏醒过来时才知道发生了什么事。）

3. The spread of the disease is when people get together. 疾病的传播是（发生）在人们聚在一起的时候。

4. The discussion was when all the members were present. 讨论在所有的成员都出席时开始了。

【注意】这类句子，句子主语往往表示“事件”概念的名词，如：“温室效应”，“第一件事”，“疾病传播”，“讨论”等；be动词在这里并不表示“是”的概念，而是“发生”的意义，相当于take place。后面的when从句表面看是表语从句，实质上起到了时间状语的作用。所以，这类句子不是真正意义上的系表结构。

【特别说明】容易混淆的两种理解：

It was when my career was just starting to take off. 这个句子，it既可以指代“时间”，也可以指代“事件”。所以有两种不同的理解，在翻译时要注意语境。

翻译一：“那正是我事业刚刚起步的时候。”

翻译二：“那件事情发生在我事业刚刚起步的时候。”或者“在我事业刚刚起步的时候，发生了这件事情。”
