《葛传槼英语惯用法词典》对 worth 的一个理解错误

◆《葛传槼英语惯用法词典》（上海译文出版社，2012年版），从681页到683页，用了近三页的篇幅，对worth, worthy和worthwhile 三个词的惯用法，做了详尽的描述。关于worth 的词性问题，由于国内外英文词典意见不一致，所以本文不作讨论。网友关心的是： worth 用法的对和错，怎样才是正确的表达，怎样避免错误。

◆《葛传槼英语惯用法词典》对 worth 的一个用法，理解失误。所以，我特别提出来，供老师们和网友参考并讨论。

It is worth discussing the question again. （见该词典681页）

葛传槼教授认为，这句话是错误的。并解释道：“discussing是 It 的同位语，worth 没有宾语，所以不对。”他的真实意思是说，discussing the question again 是真正主语，It 是形式主语，因此worth没有宾语，所以不对。大家也许不知道，《英语惯用法词典》第一版是在1958年，那个时候，有些语法学家都把真正主语叫做 It 的同位语。还没有形成“It 充当形式主语，真正主语外置”的理念。当然，这跟讨论的问题没有关系，只是一个名称问题。

◆下面，我们开始讨论这个问题。看这两个例句：

1. The question is worth discussing again.

2. It is worth discussing the question again.

第一句，几乎所有学习英语的人，包括初学者在内，都认为是正确的。这里，worth 是介词用法，discussing again 为动名词，其逻辑宾语是句子主语The question。既然句子正确，大家认可没有异议。

第二句，葛传槼教授认为是错的。理由可能是，根据第一句 worth 的词性，认为第二句的 worth 也是介词，因此认定缺少宾语。

实际上，第二句也是一个正确的句子。本句的 worth 不是介词，而是形容词。其结构为：

It is worth discussing the question again.

形式主语 + 系动词 + 表语 + 真正主语（外置）

以下例句来自权威词典，应该是最有说服力的证明：

It is worth making an effort. （DCE）

It is worth noting that the most successful companies had the lowest prices.

值得指出的是最成功的公司价格最低。

《牛津词典》

It may take a number of attempts, but it is worth keeping at it

可能要试几次，但还是值得坚持的。

【个人体会】

1. 以上例句说明，在现代英语中，worth 可以用作一个普通的形容词，而且已经十分普遍。可以使用动名词作为真正主语，it 为形式主语。

2. 在国外出版的词典中，这种用法已经大量收录。语料库中更是不乏其例。

3. 可惜的是，在国内出版的英语词典中，没有找到一例这样的句子。看得出，早期的语法学家包括葛传槼、张道真、薄冰等教授，对 worth 的用法可谓小心翼翼。因此对国内英文词典的编篡产生了一定的影响。

4. 在英语应用中，人们不再拘泥于这个固定的模式：The book is worth reading.  而是采用更加开放的表达方式：It is worth reading the book. 同时也取代了这个读音复杂的worthwhle：It is worthwhile reading the book.

就像 The book is difficult to read. 同样也说 It is difficult to read the book. 是一个道理。语言表达趋向多样化。

5. 作为英语学习者、爱好者或研究者，我们应该与时俱进，对于 worth 这个形容词出现的新用法，现在可以放心大胆地使用了。

◆此外，就在同一个词项下，还有一个句子：It is worth remembering that all that glitters is not gold.  由于这句话是正确的，葛传槼教授无法按照之前的观点去解释，所以对上述结构再次出现了错误的理解。他认为，这个句子虽然是对的，但他对句子结构是这样分析的：

it 是形式主语，that all that glitters is not gold是真正主语（他称是it的同位语）。也就是说，remembering 仍然有逻辑宾语，就是 it，也就是that all that glitters is not gold。

现在看来，葛传槼教授的这个分析也是错误的。实际是整个动名词短语 remembering that all that glitters is not gold. 作句子的真正主语，it 是形式主语，worth是形容词作表语。
