if 和 whether 表示“是否”的用法比较

if 和 whether 都可以表示“是否”的意思，在句子中有时可以互换使用，有时不能互换使用。

一、if 和 whether可以互换使用的情况

（1）引导主语从句并且与形式主语 it 连用时。例如：

It is not clear to me whether / if she likes the present. 我还不清楚她是否喜欢这个礼物。

（2）引导的宾语从句放在主句后面时。例如：

Did you ask whether [= if] they were going? 你问过他们是否要去吗？（《韦氏高阶英汉双解词典》p.2384）

I’m not sure whether / if I’ll have time. 我不敢肯定我是否会有时间。（摘自《牛津英语用法指南》第四版261.1）

I asked whether / if she had any messages for me. 我问她有没有给我的口信。（同上）

I asked them whether / if they would win the match. 我问他们能否赢得这场比赛。

Do you care whether / if you win? 你对自己是否会赢很介意吗？

He asked me whether / if Miss Li was a teacher.他问我李小姐是否是一位老师。

Nobody knows whether / if he likes this birthday present. 没有人知道他是否喜欢这份生日礼物。

（3）whether...or not 和 if... or not引导的从句不在句子开头时（or not 和 whether / if 之间必须有其它单词）

I don’t care if your car breaks down or not. = I don’t care whether or not your car breaks down.我不关心你的汽车是否坏了。（《薄冰英语惯用法词典》p.403）

I don’t care whether your car breaks down or not. 我不关心你的汽车是否坏了。  

The game will be played whether it rains or not. 无论是否下雨，比赛都会举行。（《韦氏高阶英汉双解词典》p.2384）

【注意】在下面的句子中，虽然whether... or not不在句子开头,但是不能改为 if... or not，因为whether 后面接的不是从句,而是动词不定式：

He wondered whether to go or not. 他不知道该不该去。(摘自《张道真高级英语词典》,p.1831)

二、只能用 whether 不能用 if 的情况

（1）引导宾语从句作介词的宾语时 (即：介词后面可以接 whether 引导的从句，不能接If 引导的从句作宾语 )

It depends on whether it will snow tomorrow. 这取决于明天是否会下雨。（摘自《初中英语语法大全》p.232）

I’m interested in whether he likes English.我关心的是他是否喜欢英语。（同上）(此句也可以译为：我对他是否喜欢英语很感兴趣。)

（2）whether 引导的宾语从句可以放在主句的前面，if 引导的宾语从句不能放在主句的前面。例如：

Whether we can really help you, I don’t know yet. 我们是否能真正帮助你，我还不知道。（摘自赵俊英：《现代英语语法》p.1242）

Whether this is true or not, I can’t say. 这是不是真的，我说不清。（同上）

Whether I’ll have time I’m not sure at the moment. 我是否有时间，目前还不能确定。 (摘自《牛津英语用法指南》第四版261.1)

（3）后面直接跟 or not 时 (即可以说whether or not,不能说if or not)。例如：

We’re going  whether or not you decide to come along.= Whether or not you decide to come along., we’re going. [= we’re going if you decide to come with us and we’re going if you decide not to come with us] 不管你决定来还是不来，我们都要去。（《韦氏高阶英汉双

解词典》p.2384）

（4）whether后面可以直接跟带 to 的动词不定式，if后面不能直接跟动词不定式。例如：

They can’t decide whether to get married now or wait.他们无法决定是现在就结婚还是等等再说。 (不能说：They can’t decide if to get married...) (摘自《牛津英语用法指南》第四版261.3)

He wondered whether to come (or not).(摘自张道真主编《现代英语用法词典》修订版,p.1813)

He wondered whether to go or not. 他不知该不该去。(摘自《张道真高级英语词典》,p.1831)

I can’t make up my mind whether to go or not. 我拿不定主意是否要去。（同上）

He did not know whether to laugh or cry. 他不知道是该笑还是该哭。（同上）

（5）引导表语从句时（即:在系动词后面可以接whether引导的表语从句，不能接 if 引导的从句。whether引导的表语从句主要作系动词 be 的表语。）

What I want to know is whether the goods come up to the mark. 我想知道的是，这些商品是否符合标准。

My problem right now is whether I should ask for another loan.（CGEL）我现在的问题是我是否应当申请另一笔贷款。

The point is whether on his merits we ought to recommend him. 问题是我们是否应该根据他的实力来推荐他。（赵俊英：《现代英语语法》p.1235）

What I was uncertain about was whether we could overcome the difficulties all by ourselves. 我不敢肯定的是我们自己能不能战胜这些困难。（同上）

What he wants to know is whether he should start a new set of computations or not. 他想知道的是他是否要重新进行一系列的技术。（同上）

The question is whether the man can be trusted. 问题在于那男人是否可靠。（摘自《牛津英语用法指南》第四版261.4）

【注意】《牛津英语用法指南》第四版261.4指出：“也可以用The question is...，但不太常见。The question is if the man can be trusted. 问题在于那男人是否可靠。”但是，在考试中最好不要选择这种用法，否则容易被判为错误而扣分。

（6）引导同位语从句时，可以用whether，不能用if 。例如：

You have yet to answer my question whether I can count on your vote. 你还得回答我的问题：我是否能指望你的选票。

The question whether we’ll go there by bus or by bike has been left untouched. 我们乘公共汽车去那里，还是骑自行车去那里，还是一个尚未决定的问题。

The problem whether the quality of the products is up to requirement has not been settled. 产品的质量是否符合要求这一问题还未解决。（赵俊英：《现代英语语法》p.1237）

The question sometimes comes to my mind whether it was worth the effort. 有时我想到这个问题是否值得花那么大的力气。（同上，这里的 whether it was worth the effort 是The question 的同位语从句）

三、如果宾语从句是否定句，通常应该用 if（不能用 whether）引导；但是在wonder后面的宾语从句也可以是否定句。例如：

I asked him if he did not know her. 我问他是否认识她。（摘自赵俊英：《现代英语语法》p.1243）

I wonder if (或whether) she isn’t mistaken. (= I think she is mistaken.) 我想知道她是否错了。（摘自《薄冰英语惯用法词典》p.403）
